Francis Coppola Diamond Collection: Malbec 2006

Francis Coppola Diamond Collection: Malbec 2006

Often, a single grape wine is quite focused, but this 100% Malbec wine offers a good balance and variety in it's palate with an overall smooth drinking wine. Traditionally an Argentinian variety, this Californian grown Malbec, along with the wine maker, create a medium to soft finishing wine that has enough backbone to be paired with grilled steaks.

The nose to was of dark fruit, like cassis or blackcurrent, along with a citric edge. The palate was a delicious combination of cherry, plum and a slight chalky note, which in a way, balanced the sweeter side of the palate. Even in these early moments of the bottle being opened, it was quite smooth, with a medium to soft finish of plum. As the bottle opened, the nose was still hinting at a citric note, not that it was bad, but maybe surprising to me. The palate becomes much smoother, and the chalky flavor changes to a mineral taste, improving from dry mouth chalk to something like an accent flavor to the delicious plum and maple syrup notes. And the finish is smooth with soft tannins and plum. Cheers!
