Riverview Cellars: Harvesting Lake Ontario’s Microclimate

If wine begins with water, then Riverview Cellars starts with the Niagara River.  Just 15 minutes from Niagara Falls, the Canadian vineyard is run on the fresh waterway that carves through Niagara-on-the-Lake toward Lake Ontario.  And after ten years of successful winemaking, Riverview Cellars is still finding ways to enhance its relationship with the unique microclimate of the region.

Boasting nine varietals over its 25 acres, Riverview Cellars has learned the art of tending to the land on which it grows.  In just the last two years, according to Riverview General Manager Mike Pillitteri, the vineyard’s pesticide use has dropped by 50% while pheromone traps and other new equipment have completely erased the need for any herbicides at all.  The move toward “greener viticulture” is already paying dividends in 2010, helping Riverview Cellars complete what Pillitteri is calling the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc harvests he’s ever seen on the vineyard.

And the thing we at Epic like best about Riverview Cellars (other than the fact that they have been loyal Epic customers since day one!) is their 2009 Riesling Icewine – the dessert wine that the region’s industry was built on.  But with 21 other wines to choose from in their Online Store, we can’t blame you if you have another Riverview Cellars favorite!
