In the midst of a cold and crisp Pennsylvania winter, there is no warmer escape than that provided by friends, food and fine wine. So what better feeling could there be than stepping out of the snow and into the comfortable and accommodating setting of Elk Country’s newest winery and tasting room? Well, timely visitors to Elk Mountain Winery suggest that gazing into the eyes of the wild, majestic elk that wander the grounds makes the experience even that much more memorable!
Weedville, Pennsylvania’s Elk Mountain Winery opened in August of 2010. It’s winemaker, however, has been working in the region for much longer. Together with owner Kevin Wolfed, winemaker Shawn Zimmerman (also winemaker for Elk Mountain’s sister winery Bastress Mountain) has put together a creative line of white, red and fruit wines that are sure to delight wine drinkers of all tastes.
For “The Ultimate Party Wine,” try Elk Mountain’s popular Jack Ass Red – a blend of five varietals with a sweet finish. Or sample the winery’s popular white options including the semi-dry Coyote White made from Vidal grapes and the semi-sweet One Eyed Stag. The Bugle Blueberry, Mountain Blackberry and other fruit wines have also received a positive response from those seeking even a bit more flavor.
Visitors to the 1400 sq ft winery enjoy relaxing with their choice of wine in both the tasting room and the wine lounge, which are quickly gaining a reputation for their unparalleled views of wild elk country. And the warmth and coziness of this winery is further brought to life by the wonderful collection of local art and photography on exhibit throughout the winery.
Current displays at Elk Mountain Winery include the works of wildlife photographer Terry Werneth and paintings by local artisan Janice Patton. Werneth’s breathtaking photography is shot almost exclusively within 20 miles of the winery, while Patton’s unique artwork and painted turkey-feathers offer a more artistic styling of the local wildlife. Much of the art on display is on sale at the winery, allowing visitors to take home their favorite piece of Elk Country with them. Make sure to visit the winery’s website periodically to stay view with the artists currently on display in Elk Mountain Winery’s Artist Gallery.
